WWII US Marine Mortar Team- Okinawa 1945

The Battle of Okinawa (April–June 1945) was one of the bloodiest clashes of World War II, fought between U.S. forces and the Japanese military on the island of Okinawa. As the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific theater, it was strategically important because Okinawa could serve as a staging ground for a planned invasion of mainland Japan. The battle involved intense ground combat, widespread use of kamikaze attacks against Allied ships, and devastating civilian casualties. After nearly three months of fighting, U.S. forces secured the island, but at the cost of tens of thousands of soldiers and a large portion of Okinawa’s civilian population, underscoring the potential human toll of a full-scale invasion of mainland Japan.

This special release is based on one of the few modern, pop-culture takes on the Pacific War, with some corrections made by me in the art where the prop department originally fell short. Each pack includes three minifigures, depicting Marines Eugene "Sledgehammer" Sledge, Merriell "SNAFU" Shelton, and Romus "RV" Burgin as a 60mm mortar team serving on Peleliu and Okinawa during 1944-1945. Each minifigure has been designed with painstaking detail to weave details from the TV show and the historically correct art where errors were made, to showcase each Marine as historically correct as possible. Accoutrements for each figure are printed in relation to their position on the mortar team, as well as personal details, such as Sledge's 45 pistol, mailed from home by his father. 

Each pack also includes a brick built M2 60mm mortar which can break down into it's real-life components carried by each member of the team, designed by Gonzalo Liberman @_pappy.boyington_. This mortar, similar to my previous kit, is the first attempt I'm aware of to capture the M2 60mm in realistic detail while maintaining a proportional size to the minifigures. Each mortar consists of 12 new Lego parts, including a printed M4 mortar sight, as well as a special prototype mortar round from BrickArms. To round out the set and add even extra detail to your build, each pack also includes two printed 60mm mortar shell tubes, which rounds were transported in, as well as their carrying crate. Every photo of mortar teams in WWII shows these empty tubes littering their firing positions as rounds were expended. 

Each option of this product contains both the minifigure pack, mortar building kit, as well as the digital instructions for the mortar if needed. The original copy and collectors editions contain additional printed display bricks for each minifigure and additional printed tiles depicting Eugene Sledge's bible, in which he recorded his war experiences between the lines, as well as his captured Japanese flag.
