The Battle of Okinawa (April–June 1945) was one of the bloodiest clashes of World War II, fought between U.S. forces and the Japanese military on the island of Okinawa. As the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific theater, it was strategically important because Okinawa could serve as a staging ground for a planned invasion of mainland Japan. The battle involved intense ground combat, widespread use of kamikaze attacks against Allied ships, and devastating civilian casualties. After nearly three months of fighting, U.S. forces secured the island, but at the cost of tens of thousands of soldiers and a large portion of Okinawa’s civilian population, underscoring the potential human toll of a full-scale invasion of mainland Japan.

Throughout the 82 day long battle, Marine Scout Sniper units would engage Japanese strong points in not only the cliffs, but across the grasslands, and in villages. Many of their lessons learned would go on to shape counterinsurgency tactics within Marine recon today. This particular figure is based on the above image of a scout platoon Marine investigating a concrete structure. As soon as I saw the very unique uniform, and total lack of equipment, I knew I had to make it. By this point in the war, the camouflage utility uniforms had already been deemed unfit due to the complicated production for a relatively short lifespan in field use. Some uniforms however, appear to have been specifically issued to scout sniper units specifically who could make worthwhile use of camouflage in the field. This Marine however, appears to have instead gone purely for high speed, low drag. His jacket is tucked into the trousers, fastened with a garrison leather dress belt. The standard helmet cover has been replaced with the mosquito net version, which only was produced with a green camouflage side, contrasting against the tan side of the the reversible uniform. To add further contrast, I've printed the legs and torso on separate printers to create the look of two different runs of camouflage or varying wear amounts. Also unique are the Paramarine issue roughout jump boots, which surplus stock from the disbanded parachutists seems to have been reissued for the invasion of Okinawa across the 6th Marine Division. These of course, have had the trousers tucked into them and the socks pulled up over to protect from debris and insects. Secured to his right leg is a fighting knife, airborne style, serving as his only piece of visible equipment.

It's drip or drown, as the kids say.
